LINSEED OIL AS A SOURCE OF OMEGA FATTY ACIDS

Linseed oil provides many essential fatty acids that should not be missing when barfing. These include linoleic acid, linolenic acid and oleic acid. Linoleic acid is an omega-6 fatty acid, while linolenic acid is an omega-3 fatty acid - both are important for a balanced diet for your animals. Oleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid, is also included.

What does linseed oil taste like?

Linseed oil has a nutty, earthy taste and a slightly bitter note. The quality and freshness of the linseed oil have a significant influence on the taste. Fresh linseed oil is usually milder, whereas old or poorly stored oil can taste unpleasantly bitter and rancid.

What is the shelf life of linseed oil after opening?

Linseed oil can be kept for about 4-6 weeks after opening if it is stored in the refrigerator and protected from light and air. Linseed oil has a high content of unsaturated fatty acids and is therefore sensitive to oxygen, light and heat, which can lead to rapid oxidation and rancidity of the oil.

It is important to keep the bottle tightly closed and in a cool place to extend the shelf life of the oil.

How do I store linseed oil?

Sealed linseed oil should be stored away from light, air and heat to preserve its quality and freshness. Here are some tips for storing sealed linseed oil:

Dark place: Choose a dark room or cupboard for storage, as light accelerates the oxidation process and causes the oil to go rancid more quickly.
Cool temperature: Store the linseed oil at a cool temperature, ideally around 15°C (59°F) or below. A cool, dark cupboard or room is suitable for this. The cooler the oil is stored, the longer it will stay fresh.
Avoid temperature fluctuations: Try to avoid large temperature fluctuations as they can affect the shelf life of the oil. Do not store the oil near heat sources, such as a stove or oven.
Remember to shake the oil well before use and observe the expiration dates on the packaging. Shaking can lead to spills.
